Andy Cook has been living and working in the Roussillon for nearly 20 years, seduced by the lure of sun, sea and some of the most affordable old vines in France. He is one of the talented winemakers behind leading winery Mas Cristine. The delicious, low-intervention La Colla wines are completely his own work, hailing from the rocky southern Mediterranean coast in the Cotes Catalanes subregion of the Roussillon. This region runs from Maury right down to the border with Spain, and the vines Andy works with are perched on the steep rocky hills cascading into the sea around the picturesque towns of Banyuls and Collioure.
100% Malvasia from 35 year old vines grown on rocky alluvial soils, whole bunch pressed, vinified at low temperatures in tank and bottled early without fining at just 28ppm SO2, which is well within what would be regarded as low-intervention. Relatively low alcohol too, at 11.5%.
It’s a subtle white which builds with air, showing delicate salted lemon and grapefruit hints, with a hint of peach kernel, herbs and minerals. Extremely food friendly, especially shellfish, pickles and salads.
