One of the best-known localities in Gevrey Chambertin. The vineyard faces south-south-east and was planted on the bedrock with about twenty centimetres of pebbles and clay soil. The vines on the plot are ancient (80-90 years old). It has a very particular microclimate – very hot during the day and cold at night. Traditional vinification is carried out: with manual harvesting; cold maceration, then fermentation with indigenous yeasts; vatting for about 15 days; maturation on the lees for 12 to 18 months in barrels, 50% of which are new wood from the Tronçais forest.
Established around 1850, Domaine Gerard Seguin is a small Burgundy estate of just 6.5 hectares, specialising in the production of Pinot Noir in the Côte de Nuits, especially Gevrey-Chambertin. Today the estate is run by Gerard himself and his son Jerome. They work along organic principles, avoiding herbicides and other chemical inputs, and are blessed with exceptionally old vines. Their wines are supple, perfumed expressions of Pinot Noir, beautifully balanced and textured and approachable in their youth, with the ability to age majestically. A wine from the hot 2003 vintage recently tasted at the domaine was bright, fresh and complex.
Seguin’s Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Lavaux Saint-Jacques has a very deep colour, with wonderful aromatic richness. It is powerful without too much structure but with great length on the palate where elegance and fruitiness are expressed. It will only improve with age, and can be kept for up to 10 years, or even longer for exceptional vintages.
