The biodynamic Chateau de Beaucastel is one of the iconic wineries of the Southern Rhone Valley. While their reputation stems from their superb Chateauneuf du Pape, the wines in their Coudoulet range offer incredible value, delivering serious wines at a more accessible price. The white can travel under the radar, but is a silky, textured dry wine with plump, creamy white peach, citrus rind and nougat notes. Drinking well now and for 5 or 6 years at least.

The 16th century Château de Beaucastel was acquired by the Perrin family in the early 1900s. With a global following for their benchmark Châteauneuf-du-Pape, the wines at this historic property are consistently among the finest in the region. Château de Beaucastel’s vineyards surround the estate, which is near the town of Courthézon in the north-east of the Chateauneuf du Pape appellation. In addition to prime vineyard holdings, the Perrin family are pioneers of sustainable farming, having converted to organic viticulture as early as 1950 and having farmed biodynamically since 1974.
The 30 hectares of Coudoulet are located just east of the vineyard of Beaucastel on the other side of the A7 motorway. Coudoulet is often considered the baby Beaucastel. The Coudoulet soil has many similarities to that of Beaucastel itself. It consists of Molasse seabed covered by diluvial alpine deposits. These pebbles called “Galets Roulés” play a big role: They take in the heat during the day and let it if off slowly at night which gives a good start to the vines in the Spring.
A blend of Bourboulenc 30%, Marsanne 30%, Viognier 30%, Clairette 10%; the hand-picked grapes are collected in baskets prior to sorting, pneumatic pressing and clarification of the must, fermentation partially in oak barrels and partially in steel tanks. Aged for eight months in barrels and steel tanks, before blending and bottling, without cold stabilisation.
